Zurich, Switzerland - Accomodation & Food

Flight via SQ to Zurich: FREE!

Hey, just need to accumulate Krisflyer points and you redeem a free air ticket to Europe too. =)

There are many credit cards now that tie up with Krisflyer (e.g. Citibank Premier Miles, Amex) which allow you to earn Krisflyer points as you spend. Personally, I prefer credit cards that give me direct cash rebates or Krisflyer points, rather than accumulate points in exchange for vouchers which I dont really need.

On a side note, there's limited seats for krisflyer redemption so do reserve your seats earlier. I did mine a year ago, call me kiasu but I flew for free! =p

Next, get the Swiss Half Fare card, which you can easily get it at the Zurich airport. It's much better than the Swiss Pass, at least for my purpose where I need to travel city to city in Switzerland. The Swiss Half Fare card costs CHF110, allow you to buy all train tickets, boat tickets (including the ticket to go to Jungra) for half the price and it's valid for 1 whole month. On the other hand, the Swiss Pass is only valid for a fixed number of days and cost much more. Seriously, I dunno why someone will prefer the Swiss Pass over the Swiss Half Fare card. *Shrugged*

I shall split my post in 3 category for each city that we went, namely Accomodation, Food & Places of Interest. Hope you will enjoy reading! As usual, do leave me a comment if you are interested to get my itinerary.  Let's start the journey!

Accommodation

We chose Guesthouse Alexander for our 2 nights stay in Zurich. It was the cheapest that I can find and yet in a fairly accessible location. Took us about 10mins to walk there from Zurich HB station, with our luggages.

Price for 2 nights stay came up to CHF250, with no breakfast provided! Argh... cost of living in Zurich is really HIGH, no wonder it's one of the cities with the highest living standard in the whole world.

Anyway, we got to check in at Hotel Alexander which is just a lane away from Guesthouse Alexander. There, the porter will help you with the luggages.

As for the room, it was small and pretty bare, with just a TV, table, bed and no fridge. Towels were provided with no toiletries. Generally, it was clean with the necessities if you are not the picky type.
However, there was NO AIRCON in the room, just a tiny fan. This was the only thing that was unbearable to stay there during summer, unless you can tahan the heat. We were so glad that we were only staying for 2 nights, coz it was too hot!

Food

1) Pizzeria Mamma Rosa

Address: Bachstrasse 19, Schaffhausen, CH-8200, Switzerland

Our Orders:
Pizza - CHF22
Gnocci - CHF19.50
A glass of Coke - CHF5.50.
Total plus tax = CHF 47

A simple meal for 2 cost S$61, expensive hor? So be mentally prepared and set enough money to fill your stomach!

This was a very home-styled place, seems like family run to me. Pizza was freshly made, using the wood stove (see the picture), which was thin & crispy. Gnocci was okay but a tad oily for me.

2) Rheinfelder Bierhalle

Address: Niederdorfstrasse 76, Zurich 8001, Switzerland

Our Orders:
Cordon Bleu - CHF19
Bratwurst Rosti - CHF15.10
Beer - CHF4.1
Total plus tax = CHF 38.20

The serving was a big portion, so relatively this was a cheaper choice. Food was decent, definitely an option for for big eaters.

3) Mexikano and Cuban Bar

Address: Niederdorfstrasse 13, Zurich 8001, Switzerland

Our Orders:
Nacho with Cheese - CHF13.90
Platter - CHF36.50
Beer - EUR6.50
Total  = CHF 56.90 (tax inclusive)

A random choice that we went for dinner as it was near our hotel. Food was filling but not impressive, and rather expensive.

4) Sprungli

Address: Refer to website http://www.spruengli.ch/index.php for the various venue.

Our Orders:
4 Macaron - CHF6.20
Hot Chocolate - CHF4.80
Total  = CHF 11 (tax inclusive)

A good place to enjoy macaron and people watching.

5) Felix

Address: Bellevueplatz 5, Zurich 8001, Switzerland

I chanced upon this when I was flipping a Zurich guide book. Took us quite a while to locate it but I guess it was worth it. I mean the place was so girly, even the toilet area was decorated with roses. A good high tea venue, especially for the ladies, chit chat or simply just laze around to enjoy the ambiance.  Then again,  all these come with a hefty price.

Our Orders:
Cake - CHF7.20
Hot Chocolate- CHF8.80
Continental Set (croissant, bread roll, butter & homemade jam) - CHF7.60
Total  = CHF 23.60 (tax inclusive)

Trust me, I already ordered the cheapest set on the menu to share. Poor thing hor? =(

But the butter & homemade jam were really good, almost licked them clean. Could it be our illusion as we may subconsciously trying to justify the price we paid for 1 bread roll, 1 small croissant, 1 slice of cake and 1 hot chocolate?  Keke

6) Bäckerei Hug

Address: Mühlenplatz 6, 6004 Luzern , Switzerland

We visited Lucerne in a day trip, and was given some leisure time to explore the town on our own. We decided to just popped in this cafe to just have a cake and toilet break. Proven that the cake here was yummy! So give it a try if you are going Lucerne too!

To be continued.. ^_^
