Miscellaneous Blog

Okie, this is not meant to be "officially" reviewing any food outlets, or recommending any tourist spots. I cant exactly classify this entry in any of the categories in my side bar, which explains the "sundry" entry.. Another common-known term will be " za ba ran"! Who cares, it's my blog anyway!! =p

I'm on leave tomorrow!! YEAH YEAH!

So thinking that since I dun have to work tomorrow, I can stay up late!! YEAH YEAH!

Btw, I just came back watching a play called "Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs". You must be thinking "Oh gosh, you are so kiddish!! Still fairytale at this age"????

Well, not that I'm old, but you are so wrong! This is not your fairy tale of Snow White, but rather a new version by local production, directed by Hossan Leong. The good thing about local production is, it is relatively easier to relate to their sense of humor with the injection of singlish now & then and the common topics happening around us, such as poison milk from china etc.

Put aside the jokes, the moral of the story is that nobody is perfect. What matters most is you & not your appearance. Message is clear, not just a brainless funny play afterall. Good entertainment for the whole family, both young & old.

I shan't revealed much, owise I will spolit the play for those who are going to watch it. For those who are interested to find out about the storyline, read more here. I really enjoyed the play, so watch it if you can! =p

Snow White & Prince Charming

I'm trying to take a picture of both of them sitting together. But Snow White was too "popular", many ppl were trying to take pictures with her, that was why she was standing. But I was still quick enough to take a shot and managed to capture both of the main leads in the same picture. And hor, both were looking in my direction, not too bad rite?

*********

Just yesterday, I went to Sunrise Academy at Fort Canning to learn cooking. It was "sponsored" so dun say that I bo liao okay? Hmm, but I'm trying to find out how much it costs to take up lessons there, but I cant seem to find the official website ( or perhaps, there isnt any??) in the search engine. Anyone who knows, tell me okie??

****

Yeah, I managed to find out the website for Sunrise Academy from a kind soul. Whoever you are, thanks! =)

****

It was quite fun cooking in a big class, reminded me of my home-economics classes long long time ago. We were making fool out of it until we realized that we were cooking our own dinner! Indeed, it was a 'horrifying" realization! We added wrong ingredients ( Alamak, all the greenery looked the same. How to tell the difference between sweet basil leaves & coriander leave?), dint really wash all the utensils & we food pinched the ingredients... haha. It was all part of the fun lah! =p

Our dinner included
  • Mango Wrapped with Rice Paper
  • Mashed Potato
  • Roasted Chicken
  • Ice-cream with Caramelized Dried Fruits

Mango Wrapped with Rice Paper

These were like po bian aka spring roll just that you would use Vietnam rice paper to wrap. We decided that the mango tasted much better on its own, hence the pathetic portion.

Roasted Chicken

This was marinated with TLC - Tender, Love & Care. We were supposed to whisper to the chicken and asked how was it doing. Kinda lame, who wanna talk to chicken, just whack lah! But teacher said so, so do lor.. teacher was lame lah...

Mashed Potato

This was easy. I learned before in home economics class. Just mashed the potato, added salt, pepper & butter to taste. We were given half a butter each, but we took more while the teacher not looking. Mashed potato, of coz, must add a lot of butter so that it would taste creamy mah. Teacher so stingy! And hor, the teacher added basil oil to it, tasted a bit weird, so we took even more butter to try to cover the basil taste...

Ice-cream with Caramelized Dried Fruits

This was topping for the ice-cream. We threw in all the dried fruits (raisin, apricots etc), spices such as cloves, cinnamon, ginger to water & brewed till it became what was shown in the picture. Tasted a bit weird though, I still prefer my ice-cream pure...

*********

These were photos taken at a Korean Resturant at Far East Basement. I'm kinda tired liao, so I shall keep it short and sweet.

Authentic & expensive

* Fingers tapping*

* More fingers tapping*

You mean, that's all you say????

Yeah lah, told you it is not a food review mah... Short & Sweet mah!

Gonna sleep lor. Ciao!!

The Atrium @ Pan Pacific

10:17:00 PM Unknown 0 Comments

My fren once asked me to recommend nice high tea places.

My reply => ( "_" ) aka blank look.

I was really not a very "high-tea" person, been once only to Intercontinent Hotel and that was it.

But after I got hold of the Women Weekly dining vouchers, then I realized WOW, there is really a neat number of high tea venues to check out. On a realistic note, high tea equals to little food quantity at a not-so-cheap price. Haha, so I guess I will remain as a "not high tea" person bah!

Anyway, I decided to check out Atrium @ Pan Pacific, because the 2 tier display on the voucher looked so tempting! I'm an addict for visually pretty stuff, so give me pretty food display, you will already win 50% of my heart, and if the food really taste that good, yeah 100%!!

Atrium is located in the center of Level 1 of the hotel, quite easy to find. If you are really that cock eye, then look out for their big red couches. And if you are super cock eye, I'm sure you wont miss their pretty waitresses wearing high slit chongsam-like uniform. Keke

*********
I went there thinking that it was a high-tea buffet, but it turned out to be just afternoon tea, with specific items & free flow of tea. Kinda disappointed though, coz I just went swimming in the morning so I was damn sure that the high tea alone cant do justice to my protesting hunger. Aiya, so be it, worse come to worse, there is always Mr M around. =)

Free flow of tea
They serve a wide array of tea selection such as classic tea ( english breakfast, earl grey etc), herbal tea ( rose buds, chamomile etc) and infusion tea ( strawberry/mango , lemon twise etc). And they will also give you sugar in a lollipop-like manner. Such a novelty! I just cant stop myself but to eat the sugar like a lollipop!!

Aside to didi and meimei, 姐姐有练过 ( Big sister is well-trained) and so my tolerance of sugar level is exceptionally high, so please dun follow me! =p

Presenting the 2 tier high tea!!
Ok, Let's take a close look one by one....

Roasted Beef with Cress & Mustard, Honey Baked Ham & Cheese
The roasted beef sandwich was delicious. Please dun look down on the sandwich hor! If simple stuff can taste good, then they MUST be really good. On the other hand, the ham sandwich was really normal.

Creamed Egg with Mayonnaise
I always like egg mayonnaise. It can never go wrong anyway. But the serving could improve a bit though. SO small, I can finish in one mouthful, and I must stress I DUN have big mouth, dun you dare to think that it was MY PROBLEM, okay?

Smoked Salmon on Rye Bread
Surprisingly the smoke salmon was not too salty, just nice. =)

Scones ( Plain & Chocolate)
Jams & Creams ( for the scones)
The scones were really nice, unlike some other places which mistook that scones were stones, so their were hard for consumption. Here at Atrium, the scones were soft & light inside. Eat the scones on their own, or with some jams/creams, both would taste great!
That was all for the savouries, so let's move on to desserts!
( Note: These are servings for 2 pax, rightfully it is 1 item for pax)

Chocolate Opera Cake

Cheesecake

Petit Strawberry Tart

Apple Crumble

The desserts were passable, I especially adored the strawberry tart coz the strawberry was really big & sweet! The chocolate opera cake and cheesecake were okay. But I dun really like the apple crumble so I dint finished it.

Well, the items may seem little but surprisingly, they were filling enuff for me. But again, to spend $28 per pax on 4 savouries & 4 petit desserts seem a bit too pricey for me. I guess it offers more on the ambiance for friends gathering and chatting over many cups of tea ( free-flow mah)... =p

Bakerzin

Yo, I'm finally back!!!

^__^

As promised, I 'm back with more food, pictures and craps!!!!

*******

I went to Bakerzin at United Square recently, apparently they have renovated with prettier setting. Btw, Bakerzin is having 2 new outlets at our familiar neighbourhood ~ Yishun & Jurong West! HURRAY!! It means dessert time anytime!!

Comfy dining area

Flora wallpaper

Let's reverse the normal order and start with something sweet ~> My Favourite, DESSERTS! =p

Chocolate Melted Cake
This is a type of cake with a filling (usually chocolate) in the center. When cut open, chocolate "lava" will run out, like a volcano.
The cake's center is made from not baking the cake all the way through, so the 'lava' filling is hot and runny. Look, warm chocolate lava oozing out from the cake!

Well, it could be even better if the fruits were sweet.

Chocolate Shouffle

Quoted from Wikipedia, a soufflé is a light, fluffy, baked dish made with egg yolks and beaten egg whites combined with various other ingredients and served as a savory main dish or sweetened as a dessert. The word soufflé is the past participle of the French verb souffler which means "to blow up" or more loosely "puff up" — an apt description of what happens to this combination of custard and egg whites.

In Bakerzin, the chocolate shouffle is matched with coffee ice-cream. A bitter-sweet combination indeed!

In comparsion, the chocolate shouffle is light & fluffy while the chocolate melted cake is thick & rich. Chocolate lover will definitely love the latter, while for rest, the shouffle will be a better choice. =)

*********

I had my dinner at Bakerzin as well. The menu for savouries is quite limited, with just a few choices in the categories of sandwiches, pasta and pizza. Currently, they offers a set meal all day for just $13.90, which includes soup of the day, main course & a drink.

Soup of the Day

The staff told me that the soup of the day was pumpkin soup, but I was served this instead. For once, I thought that my taste bud had gone hay wired! Sent shivers down my spine, it will be hell for me if I cant taste properly!!!

Heng, I bothered to check the menu again. They have a spicy tomato soup in the menu which I concluded that I must have been served the tomato soup instead. Apparently, it was the staff who cant tell the difference between orange colour ( pumpkin) and red colour (tomato)... Oops, I was being paranoid afterall.... hee
Free flow of bread

I just love free flow of bread. The bread here is as good as those freshly baked in Cafe Cartel. It's so good that you can even eat it on its own!!
( Sidenote: Actually I wanna eat with butter, but the staff took too long to come back with butter and took even longer to come back with butter knife... Hmmm)

Ham & Bacon Penne

This was quite normal, nothing much to flaunt. There wasnt much choices for me, coz there was a list of specific main courses that I could choose from, which was mostly spicy.
Hmm, I guess I prefer desserts in Bakerzin more than the savouries.

Friends @ Chomp Chomp [Closed]

1:41:00 PM Unknown 0 Comments

This marked the beginning of my "Woman Weekly 1-For-1 Dining Journey"!! ^_^

I picked this place mainly because of the proximity to my house. Come to think of it, I never really notice "Friends" even though I have always frequent chomp chomp area. It just seems to be so "unfriendly" from the outside, quite an irony with its name though. Keke

Playing with my camera while waiting to be served...

While I was playing with my T70, I noticed that most of the customers were here because of the voucher.... Aiya, because they were all mostly couples and ordered the same food mah. Highly observant!

Question then, where was the usual crowd??? Hmm...

********

The food was finally here! Soon, I would find out whether my instinct was true...

Hot buns and butter

Nothing suspicious about this, so "release the suspect"....

First Course => Appetizer

Smoked Mackerel with potato cake

Or

Australian Mesclun with baked tomato

Obviously, the first choice was more worthwhile given the fact that the salad aka 2nd choice was also part of it. Taste wise, salad & potato... well, nothing exciting.

Second Course => Soup

Mushroom Soup

Or

Tomato Soup

The mushroom soup was rich, not because it was creamy but seemed to be real mushrooms blended into a soup base. However, it got rather boring after awhile. On the other hand, the tomato soup was kinda appetizing, being a bit sour to excite your taste bud. But I though adding some ingredients into the soup can "warm up" the jaws a bit... ha

Third Course => Main

Roasted Crispy Pork Knuckle

Or

Grilled Grey Mullet Fillet

The pork knuckle was a good try. Too bad for those health-conscious souls, but eating the skin is a must here. The skin was roasted crispy, while the meat remained tender. Best of all, it came with a serving of mash potato. The fillet was really normal, with nothing to rave about.

Fourth Course => Dessert

Chocolate Mousse

Or

Creme Brulee

The chocolate cake tasted like any other chocolate cake from your familiar bakery shop and the creme brulee was too sweet for full consumption.

******

Would you want to pay $49.90 ($60+ after all taxes) per pax for the above 5 course ( includes coffee/tea) dinner set for a person? Definitely not me.

First of all, I dun think the food taste that fantastic to warrant that kind of pricing. Secondly, some of the food was rather disappointing, not even passable.

I guess those who went there before would agree with me, otherwise how to explain the pathetic crowd on a Saturday night?

Go if you feel that I'm was being too critical about the place, but search the address/contact yourself! =p
