Korea - Free & Easy (Part 2) - Jeju

Jeju does not have an extensive metro/subway network, so travelling around is not as convenient as Seoul. Well, to save the trouble, I just engaged a taxi driver aka tour guide, which is a common practice for tourists going to Jeju, prices probably range from KW$100,000 to $150,000 a day (8 hours).

For the next 2 days in Jeju, I engaged a driver called Mr Won, who can speak pretty good english, a bit of chinese and good japanese.  His rate is relatively high ( KW $150,000 per day) cos he is very popular.  Dun believe? Just google. =p

Unfortunately on the first day, Mr Won had something on quite last minute and got another taxi driver to bring us around. Although that driver was cheaper (KW$130,000, which was not exactly much cheaper), he was acting oddly like 'disappearing' once we reached a destination - we had to go and find him when we finished touring the place on our own, dun quite tell us where we were going, mumbled to himself now and then, anyway overall, I dun felt comfortable lah. And on the second day, weather was unkind to us, raining and super strong wind ( that kind which will blow your umbrella away one) when we were supposed to visit those outdoor sites, so bo pian, got to miss some places.  *Sigh*

Oh, and Mr Won was very kind, he offered to drive us to the airport on the next day for free! Heehee

If you dun have itinerary, Mr Won will suggest for you, otherwise use my one lor....keke...

Day 1 itinerary

Jeju Traditional 5 Day Market

A super big market selling all sort of things - from vegetables, fruits, ginseng, meats to clothing, food and even puppies and living chickens. If you wanna buy ginseng by weight, can consider here as those ready packed ginseng in Seoul Lotte Mart were quite tasteless.

Mysterious Road

Experience going up the slope when the car is pointing downhill and on free gear.  It looks like any other road, so I dunno why also... Haha

A picture taking exhibition hall for korean drama lovers! There are costumes and props provided for you to wear and take pictures in the different movie settings.

Weird uncle took us here without telling us anything, so frankly speaking, I dunno what was this place. *Helpless look*

The museum was rather boring lah, just a lot of tea pots from all over the world. BUT, the cafe there offers very nice green tea roll! I know eating the cream was sinful, but I just cant help it! If you are not planning a trip to Jeju, dun worry! O'sulloc can be found right at myeongdong. Check out the website here for the locations in Seoul.

A bigger and second 'trick art' museum in Jeju! Come here and take funny pictures and trick your friends into believing that you have super ability like posing upside down from the ceiling.

You see ar, both pictures are the same but looks different from different angles.  Amazing hor?

My most anticipated museum, but it is much smaller than I thought.  Includes a 3 storey high indoor exhibit and a outdoor area as well, probably can finish touring the place in around 30mins - 45mins?

There's another Teddy Bear Musuem in N Seoul Tower if you are not coming to Jeju.

Some nature sight seeing included as well! ^_^

Jeongbang Falls is the only waterfall in Asia that falls directly into the ocean. If you are lucky, you may also catch rainbow! But hor, remember to wear comfortable flat shoes if you wanna take really nice close-up pictures, coz very rocky there, so hard to walk.

Odeolgae is a shooting location in the show Daejanggeum, which is located not far from the Jeongbang Falls.

This place recommended by the receptionist from December Hotel, walking distance from the hotel. Our 'criteria' to the receptionist - cheap cold noodles. But he said cold noodles is not common when the weather is cold, so he recommended hot noodles instead. Keke

The restaurant seems like family run, small & simple. Although they only have pork noodles soup (KW6000), anchovy noodles soup (KW4000) and bibimgook soo (KW5000) here, the place was packed with customers. They also gave free-flow of side dishes and water.

We had the pork noodles soup and what a big bowl, filled generously with pork meat and noodles. Especially in a cold night, the hot noodles soup really warmed the heart. =)

Address is on the print out of the map given by the receptionist, I couldnt type in Korean so I just took a picture of the address! Smart right?

Day 2 itinerary

Today was supposed to be an 'Outdoor' day. Alas, the weather was so bad that we had to miss so many places.  It's really a pity as we probably will not be going to Jeju again. Guess I can only flip through those tourist guide book rather than seeing it myself  =(

This is one of the many UNESCO World Heritage in Jeju ~ a lava tunnel which is approximately 13km long.  Dun worry lah, you wont be walking 13km, only 1km is opened to public. Keke.

This is one of the 'wonders' in the tunnel - a natural formed stone that shaped just like Jeju island, with the centre part symbolizing Mt Halla. Mother nature is great!

Pretty maple tree near the entrance of the lava tunnel.

Lunch was settled in this shop located in the Manjanggul Lava Tube park, recommended by Mr Won.  Both of us ordered the miso tofu soup (approximately KW7500, cant really remember), which came with 5 other side dishes. I love the crispy anchovy and asked for a second serving. Oh ya, all the restaurants that we went gave us side dishes & water, which were refillable.  I suppose this is the common practice in Korea? Nice hor...

This is not in my initial itinerary but because it was raining, we went lor coz indoor mah.

Really need to salute those haenyeo in the past, they would dive into the freezing cold water with normal cotton clothing and simple tools to gather the clams, abalone to earn money for the family. In the past, women were usually the breadwinner and there's a saying that it's better to be born as a cow than a woman in Jeju. Thankfully, life is better for women now.  Anyway,  this is a dying trade and there is probably just a few thousands remaining haenyeo, who are all grannies of age of 60 - 80+ years old.

There are still korean people staying in such old traditional houses in Jeju, which is under the heritage preservation by the government.  They will preserve the outlook of these houses with modern finishing inside. Cool huh?

As the rain was still super heavy, we ended up going Trick Art Museum, which otherwise we would have skipped since it's similar concept as Alive Museum.

Some other places planned in day 2:
We skipped mini land, but still went to the other places. But because the wind was so strong, the pictures turned out horrible - flying hair across the face, blurred photos... *rolled eyes*

Tonight, 'criteria' for the receptionist ~ abalone porridge! Like a walking food directory, he printed out the map for us in no time.  The address below...

We were early, so that's explained the emptiness.  And we were 'assured' by the many signatures on the wall, must be good lah!  We ordered abalone porridge ( think about KW12000 or 15000 each) for each and a grilled mackerel (also about KW10000 +) to share.  The porridge was tasty but not much ingredients. Still, I think it was pretty good to try. =)

This will round up my Jeju's trip, next up, Seoul! Stay tuned! ^_^

Hi, can you send Mr Won's contact details over to me at jncl85@hotmail.com? Also, do we need to cater for Mr Won's meals throughout the 8 hours/day?

Hihi!

This is Mr Won's email address maarooii@yahoo.co.kr

Food wise, you dont need to cater for the driver. But of coz, it will be a kind gesture to offer them a treat!
